June 18, 1940:
WINSTON CHURCHILL RALLIES BRITISH CITIZENS
In one of his greatest speeches ever, delivered first before the House of Commons on June 18, 1940, and then broadcast to the nation, Winston Churchill inspired his countrymen to soldier on after the fall of France, assuring them that if Great Britain upholds its duty to fight, "men will still say, 'This was their finest hour.' "

June 18 1950
Egypt, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Yemen signed a security pact.

June 18 1953
Egypt became a republic and King Faud was deposed by the Egyptian army under the command of General Mohammed Neguib and Colonel Gamal Abdel Nasser.

June 18, 1872:
MYSTERIOUS CRASH AT HEATHROW AIRPORT
On this day in 1972, a Trident jetliner crashed after takeoff from Heathrow Airport in London, killing 118 people. The official cause of this accident remains unknown, but it may have happened simply because the plane was carrying too much weight.

The House of Representatives votes to end US investment in South Africa.
