Indonesia executed eight out of nine drug convicts by firing squad despite the appeals by Australia's foreign minister for a stay of execution so that claims of corruption during the trials of two Australian prisoners could be investigated.
Indonesia defended the execution saying that the killings were necessary to combat the country's "war against drugs".
Local pastors and officials said that the eight prisoners joined together to sing "Amazing Grace" immediately prior to the executions and chose not to wear blindfolds.
However, Attorney General Muhammad Prasetyo said the executions have been performed successfully and perfectly.
The execution included two Australians, four Nigerians, a Brazilian and an Indonesian man.
